Eminent domain in Nebraska

Senator Brown,

It has come to my attention (via the Kelo vs. New London finding in the Supreme Court earlier this week) that while eight states (Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Maine, Montana, South Carolina and Washington) forbid the use of eminent domain for economic development unless it is to eliminate blight, Nebraska does not. This is of grave concern to anyone in Nebraska who owns (or intends to own in the future) a home. Since the federal government clearly does not take property rights very seriously, it is time for Nebraska to step up and narrowly define eminent domain powers, and to protect the homes of its residents.

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help you introduce this issue in the legislature.

Regards,
Erica Tesla

Nebraskans: find your district (or check here if you're in Omaha, or here if you're in Lincoln. Then, find your senator, and email them. Let them know you care about eminent domain.

I remain absolutely astounded that SCOTUS could rule this way...I don't know whether to puke, cry, or just laugh...

(oh, and HI, ERICA! long time, no see!)

Well, I'm glad to hear that I can enjoy a false sense of security here in Illinois. When I heard about the expansion of Eminent Domain, I was quite upset, but I guess I'll not have to worry about that one. I was fired up earlier this week over a proposed cut in the federal budget to public broadcasting, but it looks like that's been ironed out :)

GL with your own state.

I can't believe they would do this to me. I had my 8,000 square foot HOME in Omaha taken from me. I paid 2.3 million dollars to buy it and they offered me a measly 800,000 for it. That's outragous!

eminent domain is bad
